Went with a coworker who is trying to make and sell 3D printed phone mounts for cars. Before he can make them, he needs to know what they need to mount to or go in. So we pulled two center consoles from E90, one pre-LCI and one LCI, since the pre-LCI has the smokers package and the LCI may or may not. While we were there, we saw this Hyundai where the engine had pretty much been relocated to the dash. They must have been going really fast when they crashed.

The Hyundai’s owner was going for a front-mid engine  layout for better handling.

Smart idea using junkyard cars for research and testing!

I brought my E92 over to his house last Friday to look at it, but it was determined that we’d need to be able to take it out to better work with it, and I wasn’t about to pull my car apart so we went to the junkyard. Now he’s got two different consoles to play with. Hoping to get a phone mount of it.

That is significantly more cronched than our Hyundai.

Speed generally isn’t the issue. It is the sudden stop at the end.....

I was amazed how much this car was crunched up.

This is relevant to my interests . I’ve snagged a couple of designs off of Thingiverse for our R53 Mini that I think I can use to piece together a phone holder and I printed cup holders for our classic mini not too long ago. Pro-tip for your buddy. Develop an additive cup holder for the classic Mini’s that can be pulled out from the dash. Something like below , but not $50. Also the company that made these went out of business.

I made it up to Pull A Part on Bufford Highway first thing this morning to get inertial switches. Always a good time.

I’ll share your comment with him, I’m sure he’d be interested in other markets.

PAP on Bufford Highway was the one I used to frequent.

I’m sure more widely available cars are of more interest, but there would be a few places where he could sell something like this.

He's sold 5 of the ones for the e30 already, and you're right about more common cars being good targets. I think his idea was to start with BMW since he was familiar and then do others. I steered him toward the E9X simply because I have two.

If he is willing to make cup holders that don’t cost $50, my R53 Mini needs some.

Like this but not $70:
